About this property

This home is set on over 5.5 acres of lush land, ideally located between Dominical and Quepos. The property offers potential for expansion, including gardens, yoga decks, and additional areas for enjoying the views. Situated in the Zacatona community, it is just above the beautiful beaches of Playa Linda and Playa Matapalo. Quepos is known for its newly expanded regional airport, a beautiful marina, and the renowned Manuel Antonio National Park. A 15-minute drive south leads to the bohemian surf town of Dominical, which features local shops, restaurants, and a brewery. Nearby attractions include the Nauyaca Waterfall and the Hacienda Baru nature reserve, along with various adventures that Costa Rica has to offer. The home is designed for indoor/outdoor living, showcasing a unique open-air concept that integrates seamlessly with its surroundings. Custom-built using a variety of Costa Rican hardwoods, this property is truly one-of-a-kind. The addition of a swimming pool enhances the overall experience of the home. With over 300 square meters of construction, the residence features a spacious master suite occupying the entire top floor, while the ground floor includes an open living and kitchen area, along with a climate-controlled storage area and office. Above the pool and house, a mirador provides expansive ocean views. The house includes 300 square meters of covered floor space, and the bodega offers 90 cubic meters of cool and dry storage along with office space. The open design was conceived by a biologist and an anthropologist who aimed to live close to nature. Construction began in 1996 and was completed in December 1999, with work conducted only when the owner was present to oversee the process. A swimming pool was added in 2003, followed by the mirador in 2004, and a new carport/shed was constructed in 2019. The mirador conceals a 1,000-liter reserve water tank for backup use. The house is built to withstand earthquakes, featuring columns made of pre-stressed hardened concrete power poles sunk 10 feet into the ground within 1-meter wide concrete-filled holes. These columns are connected by three hexagonal rings: one at ground level, a second on the second floor, and a third at the roof level. Beams are attached to the columns using a single large bolt, allowing for flexibility without causing structural damage during a significant quake. The construction materials include various Costa Rican hardwoods, such as Chiricano beams and joists, Nazareno railings, flooring, and dining and desk tables, Carey flooring, Manglillo ceiling, and Teak roof supports. The main floor and bathrooms feature Spanish tile, engineered to slope towards the edges to channel water into a drainage moat and large drains. The swimming pool pump and timer were replaced in 2021, and the filter sand was changed that same year. A water concession was submitted and approved to MINAE in July 2021. The current owner's association dues are $1,000 per year for houses with a pool, which contributes to road maintenance.
